Alexander Visot, D.D.S.
Cosmetic Dentist & Implant Dentist located in Woodland Hills, CA

Typically, getting a crown to treat a damaged tooth takes two dentist visits. Dr. Alexander Visot uses Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC) technology to create and fit patients with crowns in a single visit at his Woodland Hills, California office. CEREC crowns aren’t just more convenient, they’re metal free, which makes them look and feel more like your natural teeth. What are CEREC crowns?

First, it’s important to know what a crown is. Crowns are protective caps placed over a structurally-damaged tooth. The cap is meant to help restore your tooth’s shape, alignment, strength, or improve the appearance.

Dr. Visot might recommend a cap in the following situations:

  • To protect your tooth after a root canal
  • To restore a cracked or broken tooth
  • To protect an implant
  • To cover a tooth weakened by a large filling

Standard crowns require several appointments to create and install, but CEREC allows for a one-day crown procedure.  Dr. Visot can customize them to match the appearance and fit of your natural teeth all in one visit.

How are CEREC crowns made?

Dr. Visot has a cutting-edge CEREC machine in his office to make your crown right in front of you in a one-day crown placement. After he takes 3D scans of your tooth, the images are sent to the CEREC machine’s computer.

The CEREC machine designs your crown using three-dimensional imaging technology.  There’s no need for gooey impressions or a temporary crown.

Once the device finishes designing your crown, Dr. Visot places a black ceramic block into the machine to mold your crown. After your crown is available, Dr. Visot cements the restoration directly onto the tooth, completing the procedure on the same day.

What are the benefits of CEREC crowns?

CEREC crowns have several benefits versus traditional, porcelain crowns. The most obvious advantage is cutting down on your time spent at Dr. Visot’s office.

Usually, if you need a crown, your first appointment is spent getting an impression of your mouth, then a dentist lab creates your crown. You may need a temporary crown with traditional methods, but with the CEREC method, there’s no need. At your second visit, your dentist fits your tooth with a crown.

Using the CEREC technology, Dr. Visot can provide one-day crown placements, saving you time and money. Another benefit is the metal-free crowns themselves. They look more like the enamel layer of your teeth and don’t create dark lines along your gum line the way metal crowns sometimes do.
